April Skies.......

Went for a bit of a walk on Sunday.
Nothing to write home about, or indeed to blog about, (I am a dull old stick at the moment) but saw this view and mused my annual muse about the proliferation of oilseed rape in the landscape these days....

A good thing, or not a good thing?.....

.......Such are the workings of the idle mind.

My sister pointed out that rape smells of old pants - which rater puts me off.

Doesn't it pong, though? Smells to me like musty dry rot mixed with tomato plants. Incredibly powerful whiff from a whole field in flower.

I have to say I haven't ever noticed the smell as being all that strong before. Just a bit cabbagey I suppose. Brassicas and all.

Part of me likes to see it in spring if for the sheer visual drama ...but another part of me that basically just wants to live in a Thomas Hardy novel disapproves of it as a "nasty, furrin weed, a'comin' over here n' taken over our fields".

I generally know where I stand on most things in life, and don't go in for fence sitting wherever I can avoid it....but oilseed rape has me flumoxed every year.

It pongs and has a really bad effect on those with hayfever and asthma - but on the positive side when made into oil, it is really healthy, and better for cholesterol levels, etc than even sunflower oil.
